Qualcomm is apparently on track to supply its phone partners with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 just in time for the company to make the flagship chipset’s announcement in October. The latest rumor doing the rounds claims that the SoC will be finalized in April, with samples expected to be shipped to OEMs by June. This should give companies sufficient time to ready their high-end smartphones for next year with Qualcomm’s first 3nm silicon. The rumor also dives into the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 specifications, which we will discuss at length here.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is said to feature AI computational and DSP performance that is twice as fast as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, along with other details
Most of the details have been previously covered, but @negativeonehero provided a summary for those not keeping track. The information retrieved from Korean forum DC Inside says that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s clock speeds are set at 4.00+ GHz, and there is a possibility that overclocked variants also materialize. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 for Galaxy will likely sport this slightly upgraded configuration, though the tipster does not mention this.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 was previously said to be tested at 4.00GHz, but despite being rumored to be mass produced on TSMC’s 3nm ‘N3E’ process, the latest update claims that the power consumption of the silicon is still relatively high. This high power draw could be due to the chipset being tested with no efficiency cores, as earlier, it was mentioned that only high-performance cores would be used. This kind of CPU cluster will deliver impressive multi-core performance but at the cost of spiked power consumption.
SD 8 Gen 4 news:
– 8 Gen 4 will be finalized in April. They will be shipped to OEMs by June, and will begin mass production in September, before the Snapdragon Summit in early October.
– Clock speed is 4GHz+, OC models are possible. Power consumption is still high at this stage.— Nguyen Phi Hung (@negativeonehero) February 29, 2024
It is unclear if the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will consume more wattage than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but the rumor does state that the upcoming chipset’s AI and DSP computational performance will be nearly twice as much as its predecessor’s. The latest information also talks about an Adreno 830 GPU, which we have discussed before and shared alleged performance numbers too, with the graphics processor said to be faster than Apple’s M2 in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme.
Of course, this data can only be verified when the first consumer-based performance samples arrive in future benchmarking results. Until then, we recommend our readers treat all of this with a pinch of salt. If you wish to learn more about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, we have a comprehensive rumor roundup for you to check out and remain informed on what Qualcomm will launch later this year. As always, we will provide timely updates in the future, so stay tuned.
