Repairing Samsung’s Galaxy Ring Is An Irreversible Process, Reveals Latest Teardown, But That Should Have Surprised Absolutely Nobody

As consumer electronics get smaller and smaller in size, the more challenging it is to repair them, and the Galaxy Ring is definitely no exception because a fresh teardown shows that the wearable has to be broken apart to get into. Unfortunately, that means that with the minuscule battery found inside the health-focused accessory, it is not expected to last a significantly long period.

Teardown team notes that the Galaxy Ring is not designed to last for more than two years, highlighting a problem with disposable technology

Given that there are no screws in place to hold the outer and inner shell of the Galaxy Ring held together, iFixit found that the only way to get access to the PCB was to break it apart. To be fair, it is unlikely that anyone who purchased the Galaxy Ring ever thought about repairing it to increase its longevity, as it is not their core device, unlike their smartphone. However, iFixit notes that, like Samsung’s Galaxy Buds 3, the Galaxy Ring is not designed to be used for a long period and mentions that it will just add to the e-waste landfill.

“Relative to other modern electronics, this is a pretty simple device. There’s nothing wrong with simple but there is something wrong with unrepairable. Just like the Galaxy Buds3, the Galaxy Ring is a disposable tech accessory that isn’t designed to last more than two years. It’s considered a bonus if you do get more out of it but there’s no question that each one of these rings will end up being added to our ever growing e-waste problem.”

While it is impressive that Samsung successfully managed to take on Oura with the Galaxy Ring with its cutting-edge engineering, consumers have to think long and hard about making a purchase. If their primary goal is to have a health-focused device attached to their finger that they can replace after a couple of years, then this is the right product for you. Also, assuming the battery can no longer hold a charge, you can still flaunt the Galaxy Ring around like a fashion accessory.
