Only These Devices Will Get Apple Intelligence Features Later This Year, As Apple Places Hardware Restrictions

Apple’s WWDC 2024 event is underway, as the company has announced major software releases on the first day, alongside its big AI push called Apple Intelligence. The company has made major strides forward in terms of executing the implementation of AI in almost all aspects of iOS 18. Note that the company’s Apple Intelligence will only be available on some iPhone, iPad, and Mac variants, as the rest of the devices do not hold the processing power or the required chips for the magic to happen.

Apple Intelligence features are exclusive to devices running Apple Silicon only

iOS 18 came with a handful of changes on the visual front, but the company did not shy away from introducing deeper AI integration within apps. It was stated at the event that only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max would be able to take advantage of the Apple Intelligence features, and the company could have further additions planned for the forthcoming iPhone 16 Pro lineup. This means that Apple Intelligence requires at least an A17 Pro or newer chips as far as the iPhone is concerned.

Apple has also placed an exclusivity restriction on iPads and Macs to bolster the new features of Apple Intelligence. If you are excited to try the new AI integrations, you should, at the very least, have an iPad or Mac with an M1 chip. The M4 chip is the latest in the lineup and capable of performing on-device operations in the fastest possible manner. The devices mentioned below will get Apple Intelligence features at launch:

  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPad Pro (M1 or newer)
  • iPad Air (M1 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (M1 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (M1 or newer
  • iMac (M1 or newer)
  • Mac mini (M1 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (M2 Ultra or newer)
  • Mac Studio (M1 Max and newer)

If Apple plans to incorporate the A17 Pro chip in the upcoming variant of the iPad mini 7, it will also be part of the devices that will be able to use Apple’s AI features. Note that the company has additional AI features in place for older models as well, but they will not be able to handle some of the on-device features due to the lack of processing power. This means that most of the AI features available on these devices will be handled through cloud-based processing. Apple will potentially add exclusive features for the iPhone 16 Pro models as well, which will add to the list of devices featuring Apple Intelligence.
